The right trailer isn't necessarily the biggest one you can tow. It's the one that fits what you're hauling, how much it weighs and how you plan to use it.
Before you buy, answer these questions.
What Are You Hauling?
Start with the cargo.
Know its weight, length and width—including attachments. A mower with the chute down, a skid steer with a bucket or a tractor with an implement may need more trailer than you think.
How Much Can the Trailer Carry?
Don't confuse GVWR with payload.
GVWR is the maximum allowable loaded weight of the trailer. The trailer itself counts toward that weight.
Check the trailer's actual payload capacity against what you plan to haul.
Do You Need Extra Room?
Buying a trailer that just barely fits today's equipment can be frustrating later.
Think about whether you'll add equipment, carry attachments or need room for tools and materials.
Can Your Truck Tow It?
Check the towing and payload ratings for your specific tow vehicle, not just the truck model.
The trailer needs to work with your truck when both are loaded for the way you'll actually use them.
Not Sure?
Tell us:
What you're hauling + how much it weighs + what you're towing with.
That's usually enough to get the conversation started.
