How Do I Know What Trailer Axle I Need?

Measuring a trailer axle with a tape measure

Need to replace a trailer axle? There are a few measurements and specifications you'll need before ordering a replacement.

1. Find the Axle Capacity

Look for the axle's identification tag or label. It may list the manufacturer, serial number and weight rating.

Common trailer axle capacities include 3500, 5200, 6000 and 7000 lbs., but don't assume the rating based on appearance alone.

If the tag is still readable, take a picture of it.

2. Measure Hub Face to Hub Face

Measure from the face of one hub to the face of the other hub.

This is one of the most important measurements for matching a replacement axle.

3. Measure the Spring Centers

Measure from the center of one spring seat to the center of the other.

The hub-face and spring-center measurements together help determine the correct axle dimensions for your trailer.

4. Know Your Brakes and Hub Pattern

You'll also need to know whether the axle has brakes and what hub/bolt pattern you're using.

For example, is it:

  • 5-lug, 6-lug or 8-lug?
  • Electric brakes?
  • What size brakes?

5. Check How the Axle Is Mounted

Is the axle mounted above or below the leaf springs? Does the trailer use leaf springs or a torsion axle?

Not Sure?

If you need a replacement axle, bring (or text) us:

A photo of the axle tag + hub-face measurement + spring-center measurement + a few photos of the axle and hubs.

If the axle is damaged or the tag is missing, bring us as much information as you can about the trailer.

We'll help you figure out what you need (and replace it for you if you don't want the DIY project!)
