Before assuming you need new lights or wiring, start with the simple stuff.
1. Check the Plug
Make sure the trailer plug is fully connected to the tow vehicle. Look for dirt, corrosion, bent pins or damage on both the trailer connector and the vehicle socket.
Sometimes disconnecting and firmly reconnecting the plug is all it takes.
2. Try Another Tow Vehicle
If possible, connect the trailer to another vehicle.
If the lights work, the problem may be on the tow vehicle side, not the trailer. If they still don't work, start looking at the trailer.
3. Check the Ground
A bad ground is a common cause of trailer-light problems—especially when several lights are acting strangely at once.
Loose, corroded or damaged ground connections can cause lights to flicker, work intermittently or stop working altogether.
4. Check Fuses
If one circuit suddenly stops working, check the tow vehicle's trailer-light fuses.
Many vehicles have separate fuses for trailer running lights, turn signals or other trailer circuits.
5. Look at the Wiring
Walk around the trailer and look for obvious problems:
- Cut or pinched wires
- Loose connections
- Corrosion
- Damaged wiring near the tongue
- Wiring rubbing against the frame
If one light isn't working, the problem may be at that light or connection. If all the lights aren't working, start closer to the plug, power supply or ground.
