You walk around your trailer and notice something doesn't look right.
One tire looks fine. Another is wearing heavily on one edge. Maybe one axle seems to be eating tires much faster than the other.
Uneven trailer tire wear isn't something to ignore.
The wear pattern can be a clue that something else is going on.
Start With Tire Pressure
One of the first things to check is tire pressure.
Improper inflation can contribute to uneven wear, excess heat and poor tire performance.
Use the tire manufacturer's recommended pressure information for the tire and application rather than guessing based on how the tire looks.
Look at How the Trailer Is Loaded
Weight matters.
Regularly overloading a trailer, or loading it poorly, can put excessive stress on tires, axles and suspension components.
Try to keep loads properly distributed and within the manufacturer's ratings.
Inspect the Axles and Suspension
If one tire is consistently wearing differently from the others, the problem may not be the tire itself.
Bent or damaged axle components, worn suspension parts or alignment-related issues can all contribute to abnormal tire wear.
That's when simply replacing the tire may not solve the problem.
Check the Wheel and Hub
Loose or worn wheel bearings and other hub-related problems can affect the way a wheel travels down the road.
If you notice unusual movement, noise, heat or recurring tire wear, it's worth having the entire wheel-end assembly inspected.
Don't Assume New Tires Will Fix It
This is the big one.
If you replace an unevenly worn tire without identifying why it wore that way, you may end up ruining the replacement tire too.
The tire may be showing you the symptom, not the actual problem.
When Should You Have It Looked At?
If you're seeing unusual wear, don't wait until the tire is completely worn out.
Have the trailer inspected, especially if you also notice:
- Pulling or unusual handling
- Excessive vibration
- Wheel or hub heat
- Visible suspension damage
- Repeated tire problems
- One tire wearing significantly faster than the others
Finding the underlying problem early can save tires, and potentially prevent a much bigger repair.
