Safety chains and the breakaway system are your backup if your trailer becomes disconnected from your tow vehicle.
How Should Safety Chains Be Connected?
Cross the two safety chains underneath the trailer coupler before attaching them to the tow vehicle.
Crossing the chains creates a cradle that can help keep the trailer tongue from dropping to the road if the coupler comes off the hitch.
The chains should:
- Be securely attached to the tow vehicle's designated safety-chain connection points.
- Cross underneath the coupler.
- Have enough slack to allow the trailer to turn normally but not so much that they drag on the road.
What About the Breakaway Cable?
If your trailer has electric brakes, the breakaway system is designed to apply the trailer brakes if the trailer separates from the tow vehicle.
Attach the breakaway cable securely to the tow vehicle independently from the safety chains, with enough slack for normal turns but not so much that it drags.
Coupler locked. Chains crossed and connected. Breakaway cable connected.
It takes a few seconds to check—and they're some of the most important safety equipment on your trailer. And if you need new safety chains, we've got them in stock.
