Here's the quick version of what you need to know about titles, tags and registration.
A Title is proof of ownership issued by the motor vehicle department. The Tag is the license plate and is the visible identifier that the trailer is registered and taxes and fees have been paid.
Does My Trailer Need a Title in Georgia?
Georgia does not require titles for:
- Trailers weighing 2,000 pounds or less
- Homemade trailers
- Boat trailers
A trailer can therefore require registration and a license plate without requiring a Georgia title.
Does My Trailer Need a Tag in Georgia?
Most trailers operated on Georgia roads need to be registered and display a license plate unless they qualify for an exemption (certain farm and agricultural trailers may qualify for exemptions).
Registration is handled through your County Tag Office.
How Long Do I Have to Register It?
For Georgia residents:
Private sale: Within 7 business days of purchase.
Dealer purchase: Generally within 30 days of purchase.
New Georgia resident: Within 30 days of moving to Georgia.
